Customer Reviews for Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens
Fantastic value for money - great performance too!!! posted on 2009-01-05
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens
I can't rate this lens highly enough as an inexpensive, high image-quality addition to your Canon. The quality of the images it produces (particularly portraits) is exceptional when compared to the 18-55mm kit lens that I imagine most people are used to.

It takes a wee while to get used to the fixed focal length if you are used to having a variable lens, but that's why this lens gives such great clarity. Sometimes you will find you can't get your desired image framed with this lens because it's simply too narrow (forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology!) - in that case you can move further away or revert to another lens!

Some people have said it's noisy, but compared to my 75-300mm USM lens the difference is negligible, and since my subjects are unlikely to be scared off by mild whirring I have no problem with what little noise it does make.

For me as an amateur enthusiast the most striking difference with using a prime lens such as this is the narrow depth of field - focusing on your subject and shooting, even in low-light conditions gives a very satisfying blurred background which really helps the subject to stand out.

If you buy one additional lens for your Canon EOS DSLR make it this one!

cheap and fragile posted on 2008-12-29
People talk a lot about how fragile this lens feels. I've got a few lenses from over £1000 down to this one for about £70. I dropped this the other day and guess what - it is completely knackered. Bizarrely the mirror in the camera stays up after every shot (which I wasn't expecting and can't really work out) and everything is over-exposed by about 2 stops although the AF works so I could just about use it if I could be bothered to compensate.

My policy is that if something breaks that easily and has build quality that poor I don't deal with it again.

However this is just such a brilliant lens for the money - fast, light and pin-sharp with great bokeh and a great focal length on a 5D with full-frame that I'll just keep buying them if they break - can't recommend it highly enough

Just try not to drop it.

Excellent results posted on 2008-12-28
I got this lens as a Christmas present to use with my EOS 450D and it's been attached to my camera since.

I took lots of portraits of my family using natural and artificial light and the results have been excellent every time. I love the DoF you can achieve with this lens - it really makes your subject stand out!

I am very impressed with the EF 50mm and would definitely recommend it to anyone, especially considering it's the cheapest Canon SLR lens I have found online. I only wish I'd found it 6 months ago!

Great lens posted on 2008-12-25
This prime lense should be a first to buy after purchase of camera with standard lense. Great for portraits. The blurr effect is great and helps to focus on the subject.

Great value for money as compare to 1.4F which is expensive.

I use this lense all the times and second most used lense for me after standard (supplied) lens. Telephoto lense is good but I love portraits and rarely use my tele lense.

Love it, well worth the money posted on 2008-12-20
I continue to be amazed by this lens. The depth of field and blurriness of backgrounds makes photos really stand out, and colour is handled wonderfully - warm in the daytime and vibrant at night. I've taken some stunning night time shots without the flash - as long as you have a light source somewhere the photos look much better without a flash.
I have found absolutely nothing wrong with this lens. Picture quality is way better than with the kit lens that comes with the EOS 400D and for around £70 it's a must-have in my opinion.
