Epson P2000 breaks down

I bought one of these from Amazon about 18 months ago but had used it very infrequently due to purchasing a laptop. A couple of days ago I was transferring raw files to a desktop computer which was going fine until it decided to freeze in the middle of transferring files. I thought fine, I'll press the reset button and all will be solved. But no good, it kept telling me to press reset again and again. Epson technical support spoke through a couple of procedures over the phone but the problem wasn't solved. They told me to send it into them for a repair, but the charge for this was going to be in excess of £150 (for a piece of kit costing £300)!! Since then I've emailed them but they are totally unbending, in fact all they want to do is sell you more kit. So while it worked it was fine but as it broke down so quickly its not something I could ever recommend. And its almost the same price as an entry level laptop.
very good but expensive

I bought one of these so that I could down load SD cards whilst out with my camera but I've hardly ever used it for this purpose. As a device it is well made, reliable, easy to use and has the best small screen I have seen. The only niggles are limitations in file naming and this makes sequencing the files in a folder almost impossible. It also plays MP3 format files but most people would use a much smaller MP3 player.
We have used the P-2000 on its stand as an electronic picture frame and taken it to friends so that we can plug it into their TV and bore them with all our photos and video. But once again we don't do it that often so it is bordering on just being a gadget, and £340+ is a lot of money. So if you really believe that this will be useful to you then I recommend it. However if you use it occasionally, maybe a cheaper product would make sense.
If you buy one and it doesn't read SD cards greater than 1Gbyte then you need to install the latest firmware which you will find on the Epson website.
Nice device, but poor support from Epson

I've had one of these for two years, and have used it mainly as a photo storage device to avoid taking a computer on long trips.
However, on a recent trip, I copied a number of cards to the device, to find that about 10% of the images were corrupted. I have asked Epson for their comments, and have received the following from their support department -
"In answer to your e-mail, the issue is down to the transfer speed off the memory card and appears to only affect the Lexar cards. At the moment the only way around this is to transfer the images to the computer and then to the P-2000. At this time we do not have any fix for this issue.". They have also said that "we are not able to guarantee compatibility with all makes of memory cards" - Not even the main ones, like Lexar?
The whole point of this device for me is to use as an intermediate storage device for photographs, and to avoid taking the computer with me. I had thought a company like Epson would provide better support, so you may wish to consider other devices from people like Canon (the M30 or M80), Archos or Smartdisk if this is going to be an issue for you.
Superb, but some minor niggles

I agree with all the other reviewers of this device - it is wonderful with superb picture quality. Other reviewers have mentioned some irritations with it however - things like not being able to sort properly, pictures and movies being renamed when copying to albums, etc. I've a couple of other things to add to the list:
file names - uses the ancient 8.3 format. This is very annoying as you cannot give the items proper names that make sense and anything with a long name that is transferred to it have their names truncated. This is very old technology!
No H.264 coding - it does not support movies encoded with the H.264 compression format. This means that most movies made for the iPod that you can buy will not play without re-encoding. This is not difficult to do on my Mac, but it is annoying and needs to be addressed in future firmware updates
Files cannot be re-named - they can be renamed when it is attached to the computer, but not in the P-2000 itself.
It looses one star due to these problems.
Fantastic Screen

I have been looking for a device to download my digital camera cards to and view them for editing purposes for some time (as I don't fancy taking a laptop computer with me on holidays) but all the ones I had seen before the Epson 2000 only had tiny screens and did not look very robust. I saw the Epson 4000 reviewed a few weeks ago in one of the photo mags but it was a little pricey for what I wanted. On further exploration I found the Epson 2000 with the same fantastic screen but less hard disk space (even so 40gb is plenty of space for me) at a much more realistic price. I brought it from Amazon and it was delivered (as usual) very quickly. I found it very easy to use once I had played with it for a little while. I would highly recommend the Epson 2000 as it is a great device, well made, vey easy to use and that fantastic screen the photos are really sharp and clear on it. The manual that comes with the Epson 2000 could be more user friendly - other than this congratulations to Epson for a fantastic piece of kit which I will be using all the time.
