Canon PowerShot G7 Digital Camera - Black (10.0MP, 6x Optical Zoom) 2.5" LCD

Canon PowerShot G7 Digital Camera - Black (10.0MP, 6x Optical Zoom) 2.5 inch LCD
The legendary Canon Powershot G6 was a great success in the world of digital photography. This is why Canon has now released its successor, the PowerShot G7, which takes over and keeps the legend alive! Underneath its professional yet stylish design, the PowerShot G7 is full of technological features! Thanks to a 10-megapixel resolution and a powerful 6x optical zoom, you can take photos in larger formats, capturing even the tiniest details. You can also enjoy excellent colour quality thanks to its DIGIC image processor. Its optical image stabiliser compensates for any vibrations, allowing you to use the camera in poor lighting conditions without the risk of blurring. The PowerShot G7 is also compatible with a number of Canon lenses, enabling it to considerably reduce the effects of ghosting on your photos and almost all chromatic aberration. Furthermore, it has an increased sensitivity of ISO 1600, which focuses and sharpens your images. This technology also allows the camera to detect up to 9 faces within one frame, with the best focus and exposure options possible. The PowerShot G7 takes its inspiration from traditional cameras as it incorporates a multi-control scroll and a personalised shortcut button. With a 2.5? LCD screen, this camera is a real pleasure to use.

Customer Reviews for Canon PowerShot G7 Digital Camera - Black (10.0MP, 6x Optical Zoom) 2.5" LCD
Good throw away camera posted on 2008-11-01
Canon PowerShot G7 purchased on 9th June 2007 total failure october 2008. New circuit board required. Repair bill will be £265.00. I contacted Canon to ask for a goodwill jesture only to be told no chance. The camera had very little use holidays etc.

Most versatile camera I've ever owned.... posted on 2008-08-29
I have previously owned a Canon S70, S2IS and G6, and this camera is really like a combination of all three. It has the small size of the S70, the full manual options and ND filter of the G6, and the zoom/video quality/image stabilization of the S2 (well, almost).

I was originally reluctant to sell my G6 but I'm glad I did, as this camera cost me £100 less and is far more usable. Admittedly you lose the amazing F2.0 tack-sharp lens of the G6, but in return you get a camera which is half the size, twice as fast, and far easier to use in everyday situations. If they could have fitted the F2 elns into this body then that would have been nice, but then it would have needed a lens cap, bigger body and so on - basically the G6 was as small as it could be with a lens that size. And it was too big.

The vari-angle screen is gone too, again to save size, and it nromal situations you can find ways around this.

To put this camera in perspective, I take it everywhere I take my jacket. I took my G6 with me on 4 occasions in 12 months, because of the size, weight, elns cap and power-button problems.

And of course, the best camera for you to use is the one you take with you...

COMPARISON TO G9 : G9 has bigger LCD, but smaller viewfinder, I prefer the bigger viewfinder on the G7.

I was looking at the G9 but then Amazon offered the G7 at a great price (£200) so I went for the G7.

This is an enthousiast's camera -- you need to spend some time looking at all the options, studying the manual and then setting up the camera for you before it delivers what you expect. I worked out which mode to choose, change the area for autofocus and set the camera to maximum resolution. Amazing photos. The camera has a very good flash with red-eye reduction which works!

Highly recommended if you don't need RAW which the G9 does, and if you can get the G7 at a good price. Digital cameras change so quickly these days and last year's model is usually superb yet at a reduced price.

Good
Excellent resolution and respectable edge-to-edge sharpness across the zoom range... Classic 'rangefinder' styling looks great, fit & finish superb... Capable of very good results at lower ISO settings... ISO 200-400 usable for standard sized prints... Huge feature set... Face detect... AF a bit of a novelty but it is very effective for novice users... Real, usable photographic control... ISO dial on body and external access to all important controls... Bright, sharp screen that works well in bright light... Rugged, solid construction and excellent build quality... Useful 35-210mm focal length range... Effective image stabilization with 3 stop advantage... Fast and responsive performance overall... Optional lens adaptors... Flash hot shoe for dedicated flash units... Built-in flash performs well... Two custom modes and customizable shortcut button... Wide range of image color and sharpness parameters... Good continuous shooting mode (at lower ISO settings)... 1cm macro mode... Excellent movie mode - and max file size increased to 4.0GB

BAD
Very little, No RAW... Massive User Guide on Disk only... Canon Ever ready case, Canon SC-DC50, not available in Europe or UK (I got mine from Australia)

This is the best compact that I have ever owned. It even gives my various Canon Digital SLRs a run for their money. I carry it with me all the time!

I almost bought a Leica V-Lux 1 but I'm glad I bought the G7.

Good but I suspect not the best.... posted on 2007-11-15
First, top marks to Amazon for getting this to me within a few days of ordering.

Next, this is/will not be the best camera you can get for your money. The G9 is available for for a few dollars more on the same site.

Also - I don't know yet if this counts as a fault but I too have a flickering LCD. This only occurs in certain artificial light conditions, strangely not under fluorescent light as per a previous reviewer. I'm considering living with it because, under all other light conditions including normal daylight all is fine.

The best bits - it's a great camera in terms of feel, appearance and features. Really easy to use, great quality and really good images. The retro look is just great.

The switches, dials, and controls are a breeze, very easy to take really good pics.

I sold a FZ-50 with a tilt and swivel screen to fund the purchase of this camera, however as I discovered you don't need a tilt out and swivel LCD with a camera if you have one a Powershot G7 as the LCD has a great wide angle view, high or low, even if framing a shot high above your head or low below it.

All in all a good purchase though I would say go for the G9 while Amazon still have it at a few quid more, you get better resolution, RAW, and a bigger LCD..

UPDATE - as per original review I believe this item is faulty as the LCD flickers constantly in artificial light. The spec/manual refers to the LCD flickering in fluorescent light but not artificial light - it really is annoying so it is being returned. Full marks to Amazon for the full and prompt refund on this item.
