Customer Reviews for Canon IXUS 850IS Digital Camera (7.1MP, 3.8x optical zoom)
Excellent Camera

A really good camera. Enough features to do whatever most "average" users want, but not so much that it is too complex to use. Another reviewer mentioned that the flash was weak - I suspect that depends on what you're comparing it to - certainly, it's been fine for our usage so far. Picture quality, colours and focus all look really good - light enough to carry around a lot (unlike my last camera). I can't think of a reason NOT to buy one of these...

An excellent product from Canon's oh-so-wow IXUS range..
Extremely pocket frienly size.. you can carry it to any of your parties without fearing to look like a dork..
Excellent Photo modes.. manual options.. lot of control on how you want your photos if you know how to tweak.. and if you dont, the auto mode is quite superb in itself.
Excellent battery life.. I have managed almost 400 shots on every single charge..
Fantastic camera

I got this camera a year ago and am totally in love with it. The other week my son dropped it into his coco-pops and I was gutted. Although it still works I have now bought another one as I'd hate to be without. I have looked at lots of different compacts but nothing tops this one.
All the positive points other put in I agree with.
If you're thinking of getting this camera I really don't think you'll be disappointed.

Great little camera, bought a year ago after much consideration and reviews checking. Certainly sold on the wider angle for indoors shots and slightly more optical zoom.
Agree that the battery/card cover is very flimsy and care needed. Two items found on friend's Casio which should be on here (unless I just habven't found them yet) - manual soft flash for close ups, and backlit bestshot function (looking into sun or with window behind).
If you are looking for a hardwearing case to protect the camera in a jeans pocket, but don't need to carry spare card or battery (i.e: a night out), try the Swordfish cases that Dixons are (or at least were) selling. Perfect fit and cheap.
Just one thing ...

First I have to say that this camera is SO GOOD that when a spare IXUS-850-worth accumulates in the piggy bank, I must buy another.
The reason is this. After looking around till my mind went numb, as far as I can see this is the ONLY camera that WILL fit in a shirt top pocket AND HAS an optical viewfinder AND HAS a 28mm-equiv-on-35mm lens. These three virtues make it outstanding. All the other merits described by other reviewers are quite right and serve to gild the lily.
The makers of compacts will soon have the world taking pix with cameras held at arms' length. This is an absurd way of framing a shot and it's an unnecessary use of battery power. Wide angle lenses start at 28mm [35mm equiv]. Picture-making possibilities are really transformed by a genuinely wide lens. And, like reviewer Paul Prescott, one does get hacked off carrying bag-loads of SLR stuff about or frequently, in my case, 5" x 4" plate camera gear.
The 'one thing' that knocks off a star is the absurdly flimsy hinged cover to the battery/sd card bay. Real care has to be taken each time you access this bay - and everyone who has a card reader [as most PCs and laptops now do] is going to open this bay on a regular basis. It would be so easy to accidently tear the cover off its hinge. The same goes for the cover to the connections bay.
This camera has been superseded by an inferior model. Canon should be ashamed of themselves. This is one occasion where I will wheel out that old market-stall cliche - come on people, buy now while stocks last.
