Customer Reviews for Canon WP-DC9 Waterproof Case For Digital IXUS 850 IS
Great for the beach and pool posted on 2008-09-15
I don't do diving, so I can't comment on really serious use, but for protecting a camera around a pool or on the beach this is great. I have hundreds of photos taken in places I would not normally have risked taking a camera and that's enough for 5 stars from me.

The casing does make the camera significantly bigger, but not to a point that limits its use. My children also found it very easy to use. My big tip is to make sure the battery is fully charged before you put the camera inside!

A vast improvement on a plastic bag ... posted on 2008-07-19
I've previously used the 'plastic bag'-type camera cases that allow you to use digital cameras underwater - for example the products by Aquapac. This purpose-designed case by Canon is a significant improvement - all the camera controls can be used, most importantly including the half-press of the shutter to lock focus. The case is sturdy, made from thick plastic with a glass screen in front of the lens, and has a secure lock and waterproof seal. As recommended, I tested the latter in the bath before venturing into the sea. Picture composition, focussing and all camera manipulations are much easier than the 'plastic bag' approach.

Why only four stars? Firstly, the case is expensive, approaching half the original price of the camera. However, I assume it's made for a niche market, so can accept this. More significantly, the instructions say that the seal should be replaced annually - I don't know how expensive this is. Although I indicated earlier that 'all' the controls can be used, this actually excludes the direct print function button. Although of little normal use underwater (!) this button is used to activate the ALT menu function for the hacked CHDK firmware update (search Google for CHDK Wiki if you're interested) that allows such things as taking RAW format images and auto-bracketing shots ... although of use only to certain users, it could be an important omission if you need this function. Finally, the plastic through which the LCD screen is viewed is prone to scratching - take extra care using lens cleaners on this bit.

I've used the case for snorkelling only, so it's been no more than 2-3 metres deep, and cannot comment on the rated 40m limit. At these depths, light isn't an issue and I've rarely needed to use the flash diffuser.

I'm impressed enough that I expect I'll purchase the relevant case for my next Canon point-n-shoot camera.
