5 out of 5 stars Tardis DSLR   August 5, 2009

I've just changed from a Fujifilm S9500 with digital viewfinder, itself a great camera to use, but that viewfinder drove me back to an SLR. I have some fast and powerful lenses from my old OM system so the E620 seemed a logical successor to the OM2s I had in celluloid days. I bought the 14-42/40-150 kit, but also an MF-1 adaptor for the OM lenses.

This is not really a review, but my first impressions and results tell me I made a good decision. It is a sophisticated camera, packed with some very smart features, yet the body and the lenses are so light and compact. I found it easy to use from day one; it has some similar features to the s9500, such as well thought out functon buttons, and has been easy to adapt to. The menu systems are clear and easy to use, and for any other old fossils out there, "it comes to hand nicely" (the late Arthur Negus). To use an optical viewfinder again is fantastic, but the live view screen is also excellent, and to have a camera that fits so comfortably in the hand makes it a pleasure every time I take it out of the bag.

One thing that irritates me is that the flash seems to default to "on" regardless of being selected to "off" in the previous session. There is probably an easy a way round this, but in low light I prefer to squeeze off a few shots before I even think about flash (often inappropriate anyway).

However, I am very upbeat about the camera.

5 out of 5 stars Unsurpased feature set + very good image quality (finally!)   August 2, 2009

I am mainly a Nikon shooter. About 2 years ago I decided to purchase an Olympus E-410 as a travel camera, mainly because I liked it size factor and feature set over that of the D40 (which delivers great image quality but soon becomes burdensome to handle, as almost everything has to be done via menu). I loved the way the E-410 handled and its incredible level of customization for an entry level model, but the image quality was dreadful. Not only was noise objectionable at almost every level (I shoot mainly B&W and could never apply a red filter because the sky would be filled with very distracting botches), but the images were smudged and lacked detail. In the end, I could not produce a single picture I was satisfied with from that camera and end up selling it very quickly.

As I always remained in love with the Olympus form factor, I decided to try again with the E-620, since I do not really like the D40 (or the D5000 for that matter) at all and the D700 is too heavy to carry around all the time. While testing, I was blown away almost immediately by the level of crispiness that came in the LCD screen, which was latter confirmed by my scrutinizing of images on the computer after downloading. Even with the kit lens (which is very good), the image quality out of this camera is way ahead of the E-410/510 era. Although there is more noise that what you would expect from an APS-C camera of the current flock, I did not find it particularly objectionable. At ISO-100/200 I would say that the level of noise I am getting is not too far from that of the D300 at ISO-200 (the D300 would probably retain a one-stop advantage over the E-620 at high ISO levels, though). Images remain usable up to about ISO 1600, which is about one stop better than what I used to get from the E-410.

Although image quality is for many the first consideration, if quality is roughly comparable with the competition the feature set is not. Olympus has always given me the impression of providing better value for money, but in the case of the E-620 it surpassed my expectations by a wide margin: outside controls for all the basic functions, such as white balance, metering, ISO, autofocus, focus point selection, all of which can be manipulated through a bottom and a dial, just like in a professional DSLR (and without taking your eye out of the viewfinder!). An outstanding level of customization, including two custom reset banks, custom white balance and autofocus fine tuning. Effective body image stabilization and a crisp articulated LCD screen. A very good live view system which is less cumbersome to use than most of what is offered by the competition. Wireless flash...and all that in a body which is smaller and lighter than most of the other entry level cameras in the market.

I know that some photography magazines have given mediocre ratings to this camera. My advise is to go to your local camera shop and give it a try, just like I did. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars E-620 Best Olympus Yet ??   May 20, 2009

This is one of many many DSLRs that i have had over the last few Yrs .
Nikon D80 to the recent Pentax KM just a couple.
Upgraded directly from E-410 as love the 9-18mm wide angle lens .
First thing is the physical side of the camera , it,s a complete gem , superb size and weight with lovely build, the Live view with articulating screen is brilliant which is very usefull esp when using a wideangle lens up close to a building etc.
Features galore more then you need.
The IS is very very good and easily get 3 stops and pushed 4 stops, this is quite unreal esp as most experts reckon Nikon VR /Canon IS lens based is better but i,ve tried both and they are equal .
Most importent is the Image quality and i have spent some hrs going thru my hard drive comparing all my images mainly from the Nikon,s i,ve had (the benchmark far as i,.m concerned) and the E-620 is equal if not better in certain areas ,Very sharp and great exposure and colours.
Def better exposure metering then D80 but thats not hard to be honest !
The above does only apply up to 800 ISO then the cropped senser DSLR s will be shading it in this area esp Nikon/Canon with there nice noise free images, and better choice of fast primes makes the Olympus struggle in low light but outdoors the Olympus is Fantastic even the little E-410 done very well out doors, also Dynamic range is much improved with highlight detail much much improved without blowing out .
To conclude then very good build,Excellent grip actually very comfortable even with my big hands,Much improved viewfinder, IS ,LCD, the list goes on .
Good prices now as well ,don,t hesitate buy the best all round Olympus
ever made to date.
Update
Low light focusing is a bit slow esp as i turned off the epilepsy inducing strobe flash assist.
If you intend to use a camera in low light indoors etc buy the Nikon 5000 which comes with focus assist lamp that can focus in complete dark and faster generally in low light, Also the D5000 has better high iso performance like all Nikon s .
3 weeks on and now really understanding this camera i,m finding the Image quality quite fantastic, very very good resolution and detail and the colours (natural mode) are stunning and completly representive of what you are taking be it people or landscape etc.
The dynamic range ie abilty to show details in dark areas and highlights is brilliant much much better then anything i ,ve had B4 and certainly a massive improvement for Olympus cameras.
You may see the comment of noise from the smaller 4/3 senser mentioned in reviews and yes it is higher in noise then say the Nikon D5000 but it,s a nice film like noise and only a problem over about 1000 iso in dark areas,
BUT it is countered by the very very good inbody IS.
Ive put a 25mm pancake lens on it amoungst others and it,s fairly fast f2.8 lets me shoot low iso all the time in most conditions and besides the flash exposure is excellent anyway if it comes to it.
Conclusion very very happy and most people will be happy with this Olympus camera.
One last thing! with the pancake lens on i can fit this baby in my combat shorts pockets no problem , how many Slr s can you do that with ? not much bigger then a Canon G10.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!   May 10, 2009

I have been using this camera for a month and have grown to like it more and more. I have been using a canon 20D and have found it heavy, cumbersome and I have been having great difficulty getting sharp pictures. The e-620 is the opposite. Small, light, and sharp pictures even at relatively slow speeds (thanks to the built in Image Stabilisation - it works!). I appreciate some people like heavy cameras and some don't. If you don't, then get this camera. You'll love it too. The two kit lenses are probably the best kit lenses you'll likely find and together they cover the 35mm equivalent of 28mm - 300mm. This camera is as easy to use as anyone could wish and as complex and comprehensive as your photographer's heart could desire. The swivel live view is FANTASTIC. Can't be all good? Well I suppose not, but the only slight negative, depending on your photo requirements, is noise at higher speeds. 800 iso and above noise becomes more intrusive. Below this it's not a problem. For most people this will not be a problem and I believe it is a small price to pay for all the benefits of which there are a huge amount. I could gush on and on but I guess by now you might realise I LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Camera   January 18, 2010

At this price, the e620 just about slips in to the "entry level" camera bracket. Olympus have smaller DSLR cameras (e420, e450) and cheaper cameras (same two, plus the e520) but you can pay far more. Firstly, although this camera is smaller than equivalent offerings from Canon & Nikon etc it still won't slip in your pocket. It needs to be treated just like any other dSLR.

For beginners and hobbyists I'd question the need to look any further. This camera has an amazing feature set including in-camera image stabilisation (rather than in-lens like Canon have), class-leading dust reduction, 23 modes of operation (including aperture priority, shutter priority and manual), live view, a couple of presets where you can customise the settings and save them and of course you get access to Olympus' marvellous lenses.

I got the kit with two zooms: the 14-42 & 40-150. For those who are used to 35mm camera "full frame" focal lengths this equates to a range of 28mm-300mm focal length. Although I have not extensively tested the big zoom yet I have taken lots with the small zoom and been really impressed. The images are really crisp, much better than I have been getting with point and shoot digital compacts.

The thing I most appreciate is that after mothballing my old Canon EOS 35mm camera many years ago for the convenience of compact digitals the purchase of this camera has totally reignited my imagination and is fuelling the notion that photography is art form not just a tool for documenting holidays and birthdays.

The "Art Filters" present in the camera do nothing that you couldn't do in Post-Production (i.e. Paint Shop Pro / Photoshop etc) BUT you'll find (as I do) that they really make you think about the best way to present a picture. You will find yourself looking at a subject and saying to yourself "would that be enhanced by the pinhole effect" or "that would look great in grainy black & white". It seems like a gimmick, but the filters are substantially more than that. Incorporating them with live view gives you an instant idea of what you are getting too.

The articulated screen is useful - it means you can shoot over head using live view and it also means that by inverting the screen you can protect it in storage.

The only thing I have been underwhelmed by so far is the in-camera flash. But having read around the subject on the net I found I was using it on the wrong setting! Like so many other things on this camera you can customise the flash to perform almost any way you want. This can obviously be confusing at first but I'm sure this flexibility will eventually become more of a useful feature than it appears to me now.

Conclusion: everything I hoped it would be. Now to find a good macro lens.
