| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The EOS 550D redefines the boundaries of Canon's consumer DSLR range, incorporating technologies and features more commonly found in semiprofessional DSLRs into the compact, lightweight body favoured by consumers. With a newlydeveloped 18 Megapixel (MP) APS-C CMOS sensor, coupled with Canon's advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and the ability to shoot Full HD movies, photography enthusiasts are empowered to explore new levels of creativity. The EOS 550D makes Canon's powerful imaging technology more accessible to consumers. Canon's advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and 18MP sensor support standard ISO settings of 100 6400 (expandable to 12800), while enhanced incamera noise reduction technology boosts performance in low light conditions. The system's 14bit image processing also produces smoother tonal gradation and natural looking colours for high quality prints and on-screen display.
For swift and accurate focusing, the EOS 550D features a 9point AF system with one extrasensitive crosstype point at the centre for f/2.8 or faster lenses. The EOS 550D also supports highspeed, continuous shooting at 3.7 frames per second (fps). These features provide users with the opportunity to exert greater control over their images, allowing them to capture splitsecond moments with ease and accuracy.

Fantastic July 4, 2009 Dr. J. Craig-mcfeely (UK) 52 out of 53 found this review helpful
This is a superb camera. I had just bought a 50D for my first camera, then this came out and I replaced my 400D second camera with the 500D, which seems to have all the good stuff of the D5 Mark II (i.e. video capture and extended ISO) without the cost and bulk, and without losing half my lenses because they don't fit the D5. The lenses I already had fit the 500D and 50D.
I'm now wondering how much I'll use the 50D, as the 500 is clearly going to be my first camera: it is the size of the 350, 400, 450 etc.; whereas the 50D is a bulkier camera. I have small hands, so prefer the smaller size for just carrying around on the offchance of taking pics. I would take the big camera if I was deliberately going on a shoot. The extended ISO of the 500 is useful, but as you'd expect with a digital sensor, grainy in the higher numbers. Otherwise this is a fantastic buy.
Warning: lenses from the other cameras mentioned fit perfectly (so I didn't have to replace anything), but the 500D takes a different memory card and battery from the 350 and 400, so I wasn't able to transfer over the spares I had for that camera, nor swap with the 50D, so I have to carry two types of spare battery and memory card. Not the end of the world, but worth knowing since if you're upgrading you might have to buy these things extra. The battery is the same as the 450D, not sure about the card for that one.
I'm really pleased with it.

I placed an order for the Canon EOS 500D on the 28th Dec and it came the next working day, how good is that? Well I'll tell you this, it's good but not as great as the camera itself. I have taken over 1000 digital photos with it already. I already had some Canon lenes, EFS 17-85 IS,EFS 28-135 IS, and EFS 70 - 250 IS which I used with my 400D so I was able to compare camera bodies quite easily. The 500D is magnitudes better than the 400D, I am amazed just how good it is, and at the price it's offered by Amazon it's a brilliant deal. Anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive DSLR should look no further than the Canon EOS500D. I have also purchased the Opteka Battery Grip and Remote Shutter Release through Amazon, I am really please with them all, do yourself a favour and order the Canon and accessories now, Amazon will get them to you fast, and at a great price.
Superb DLSR for all levels of competence. January 29, 2010 M. Lee (London, England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I recently bought this camera to replace my EOS 350D which had served me well for the past 4 years.
There are a number a great improvements since the 350D. The ISO range has been extended to 128000 which is great for extremely low light applications (although a lot of digital noise is not surprisingly apparent). The viewing screen on the back of the camera is much larger and clearer and the menus easier to read and understand. It can also be used to view the image being taken as an alternative to using the SLR viewfinder (just like on a compact). It has an HD movie mode too although I haven't personally found a use for it yet.
For novices it can be used in fully automatic or a range of preselected creative modes for landscape, portraiture etc. or be used in a range of semi automatic modes such as aperture or shutter priority or full manual control.
I usually shoot in RAW format (only available in semi automatic modes) which requires post processing with the software supplied in order to creat jpeg or tiff images but for users in more of a hurry or who want to use pic bridge or direct from card printing it can also shoot in jpeg mode or both simultaneously.
The buffer for continuous shooting is huge and will run at over 3 frames per second for over 300 shots in jpeg mode or 9 in RAW.
Resolution is also fine at over 15 megapix.
The lenses are Canon EF type which has an enormous range and are readily available both new and second hand, giving full autofocus or manual focus at the flick of a switch. Many lenses are also available with image stabilisation (have the letters IS in their model description).
An all round great performer which is light and easy to carry about and simple to use. I am delighted with this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking for a first DSLR or an upgrade.
Canon EOS 500D - Highly Recommended September 11, 2009 S. P. O'GORMAN (Kent, UK) 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I previously owned a Canon EOS 350D and had looked at the 400D and the 450D, but I am glad that I waited for the 500D to come out. Amazon had the best price - as usual - and the delivery was on time (it actually arrived one day ahead of forecasted delivery). I also bought the Canon EF Zoom 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens at the same time and together they produce spectacular results. I highly recommend the EOS 500D.

I used to own the Canon 400D so was already a Canon fan. I upgraded to this for several reasons - 15.1 MP resolution, ability to take RAW files without taking JPEGs at the same time and the HD video capability (which I haven't used yet!)
Having taken about 4,000 photos in the last 6 months whilst on holiday, at motorsport events and at kayaking competitions - I am very happy with my decision. The camera does everything I need and works very reliably. For the price I think it is a bargain (although I do keep looking at the next range up wondering what difference they would make to my pictures).
A couple of things to note if you are changing from the 400D though - the battery is different and so is the memory cards, although they are the same as on the 450D.
